Straight Skirt with Godets

straight-skirt-with-godet-2godet is a triangular-shaped section set into a slash or seam. The godet is found on skirts, sleeves, and pants, in varying lengths and widths, to give fullness and movement to an edge.

STEP 1 SKIRT

A. Trace two-dart fitted front skirt, changing darts to tucks.
B. Drop waistline 1 1⁄4” at center front for a shaped waistband, and blend a line to the first tuck.
C. Draw godet slash line parallel to center front (///:4”) up to approximately knee level.

D. Draw two lines 1⁄4” on either side of the slash line, connecting at the top of that slash line, Which become the sewing lines for the godet.

STEP2 GODET
A. Square a right angle. Measure the sewing lines from th skirt (dotted lines) and mark that measurement onto both sides of the right angle.
B. Complete hem edge by drawing a curved line, using the seam length as a radius.
VARIATION For a godet with moderate flare divide the quarter-circle godet in half and locate the grain line in it’s center.

STEP 3 SHAPED WAISTBAND

A. From crosswise fold of a piece measure down width of the band desired (///:2”), and from it square a line parallel to the fold.
B. Plan waistband length. Measure front skirt waistline. Cross mark that measurement from center front to indicate side seam.

C. Measure back skirt waistline. Cross mark that measurement from side seam, and square a line down from fold at that mark for CB.
D. Cut out shaped area of the waistband from skirt and match it to waistband pattern at center front. Trace around shaped section.
E. Use a tracing wheel to transfer waistband through folded paper. Unfold paper to reveal waistband and its self-facing.
